An Taobh
Siar (The West Side)
|
| Shawbost on the west side of Lewis, 18
miles from Stornoway offers the visitor a unique holiday experience in that it
is on the circular route that can be taken from Stornoway, taking in sites,
such as:- |
Arnol - Black House Black house
museum. This traditional Lewis thatched house has been maintained as it was
when lived-in by a local family |
Bragar - Whalebone Arch This Blue
Whale came ashore in Bragar in 1920 and was over 85 feet in length, with the
harpoon still attached. The jawbone arch is one of Lewis' best known
landmarks. |
Shawbost - Harris Tweed Mill, Museum
& Norse Mill A visit to Shawbost is not complete without seeing the
famous Harris Tweed cloth being woven. The Tweed Mill is managed by Rhoda's
cousins Derick and Coinneach Murray. Have a tour round the mill to see wool
being spun and tweed being finished, then go to the weaver's home to see the
hand weaver at work. The Shawbost Museum is well worth a visit together with
the restored Norse Mill and grain kiln.
